NPFL19: MFM FC beat River's United to remain in top three contention (2)

MFM FC of Agege welcomed a resurgent River's United to the soccer temple. The visitors were bent on defeating their hosts and consequently going above them on the log in the battle for the top three slots in the group.

MFM FC, on the back of several draw results at home knew the importance of this fixture and approached it with the required viguor, mounting a series of early attacks on the River's United's box to try to get an early winner. The home side got their dream start in the 5th minute when Akuneto was brought down in the box and he dusted himself to finish past the visitor's goalie for 1-0. Adeyinka sent a long throw into the River's United box but was met by a River's United head. The clearance fell kindly for Akuneto who was lining up a shot in the box when he was barged off the ball from behind for a penalty.

After 1-0, the visitors took over proceedings and bossed every area of the pitch but failed to score despite consistently knocking on the door. Ossy Martins was particularly culpable for a miss in the second period, putting his snapped effort wide of the left hand post when it was easier to score than miss. A good delivery into the box was misjudged by the MFM substitute goal keeper Odekunle who attempted to gather but made a mess of it, with the ball falling kindly for Ossy who snapped at the ball and put it wide.

Speaking after the game, Fidelis Ilechukwu of MFM FC noted that the game was a tough one, with the opponents doing everything right but put the ball in the net.

The win sees MFM remain in third place, three points ahead of Lobi Stars in 4th place and a point behind Enyimba in 2nd spot.
