Rivers United condemn table toppers Rangers to back to back losses in 3-0 thrashing (2)

Rivers United of Port Harcourt played host to table toppers Enugu Rangers in a Group A rescheduled fixture. Rangers came into the game on the back of ending their 13 game unbeaten run following a 2-1 loss to Bendel Insurance last week and hoped to atleast get a point in Port Harcourt.

The home side however had another thing planned as they  sought to continue their climb up the table ahead the weekends tie with MFM FC of Lagos. True to their purpose, Rivers United took the game to the visitors  in search of a first half goal which will eventually come in the 36th minute  when Malachi Ohawume scored from close range from a ball that fell kindly to him after ricocheting off the body of a Rangers player.

One became two soon after the restart with Wasiu Jimoh finishing off a nice team move. Konan N'gouan drove a low cross into the box from the left flank for Jimoh who obliged to finish off a great passage of play.

With Enugu Rangers there for the taking, Nelson Esor took matters into his hand to score what was clearly the pick of the day. Esor weaved through the defense and evaded a robust challenge by Pape Sane to poke home past Nana Bonsu who has had to pick the ball out of his net five times in a week.

Despite these loses Rangers stay top but lost opportunities to pull further away from the pack and establish themselves as firm favourites heading into the remainder of the season
