NPFL 19 PREVIEW: Enyimba vs MFM FC

The Nigerian Professional Football League(NPFL) 2018/2019 season has finally received the green light after months of infighting and will kick off this weekend with several juicy fixtures on the cards. One of these encounters will see last season’s continental campaigners Enyimba  play host to MFM FC.

The two teams are familiar foes with previous five meetings under their belts. The Peoples Elephant came out victorious in this fixture last season while the previous four games have seen the teams share the spoils. This match will have renewed meaning however as MFM FC will come up against former midfield maestro Chukwuka Onuwa  and right back Stanley Okorom who left MFM at the end of last season and now fly the Enyimba flag.

Enyimba will be without some prominent figures from last season, most notably former captain Mfon Udoh who now plays for Akwa United and midfield enforcer Dare Ojo who now represents Lobi Stars.

MFM FC will also wear a new look as the bulk of their first teamers from the last campaign have moved on to other clubs, with the exit of Sikiru Olatunbosun and Ckukwuka Onuwa spelling the end of the SOS attacking partnership of two seasons ago between the duo and Stephen Odey.

Head coach of the Olukoya Boys, Fidelis Ilechukwu has said that the 2018/2019 NPFL season will be a fresh start for his wards. In an interview with MFM FC media department, the gaffer noted that-

“It’s going to be a fresh start for us playing against Enyimba Football Club one of the best in the Nigerian league. MFM Football Club are a good side as well although I know it’s going to be difficult because we lost a lot of our players to other clubs. Last season we lost eight players but the players we have now are young and as well new players. I know it’s going to be a little bit difficult but we will do [everything]anything possible to get a good result,”

11 May, 2016 MFM FC 0-0 Enyimba

18 Sep, 2016  Enyimba 0-0 MFM FC

11 Mar, 2017  Enyimba 1-1 MFM FC

6 Aug, 2017   MFM FC 0-0 Enyimba

28 Mar, 2017 Enyimba 2-0 MFM FC

With the strength in Enyimba’s team coupled with the drop in the experience of the Olukoya Boys, the home team is expected to mount enough pressure on their opponent with total reliance on their vociferous fans; they are expected to win this one however, not by a very wide margin.
