COPPA ITALIA: Inter Milan Wallops Benevento 6-2

Spalleti’s men ran riot against their Seria B counterpart in a much needed victory at the San Siro to book their quarter final place at this seasons Coppa Italia to keep hopes alive for their first silverware in eight years.

The match which was played in a ghostly atmosphere following ban for the racist abuse of Senegal defender Kalidou Koulibaly last month. Inter Milan converted a dubious penalty awarded to them in the 3rd minute through Mauro Icardi. Benevento nearly drew level immediately after but were denied by Daniele Padelli. Candreva fired home a rebound in the 7th minute after an Icardi header struck the post.

Dalbert scored the third just before the break, the Brazilian’s first goal for Inter since his move from Nice 18 months ago. Martinez scored a brace in the second half as Candreva also completed his brace in the 90th minute. Robert Insigne and Filippo Bandinelli reduced the deficit for the visitors in the 58th and 74th minutes respectively.

Inter Milan awaits a quarter final fixture with Lazio on the 30th of this month.

Spalletti's side will play the final of their two-match stadium closure ban on Saturday as they host 11th place Sassuolo in Serie A. With the Nerazzurri currently in third, they will be looking to consolidate their grip on a Champions League spot and keep ground between themselves and Lazio
